NOBODY KNOWS, NOT EVEN GOOGLE
AGI. Agents. AI overviews. You’ve probably heard it all. But what does it mean for you and your business? Here’s our initial perspective in a quick overview:
- NOBODY KNOWS: That’s our summation after reading, watching, and listening to all of the “gurus”.
- THE JURY IS STILL OUT: There is simply not enough information, as the environment is too new to be able to determine what will happen to Search.
- HOW WILL PEOPLE SEARCH? Does Google keep its 90% share of the search market? Probably not. But, what share can it keep?
- WHAT ABOUT THE LLMs? We have metrics to show that since the introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022, Google’s worldwide share of search has slipped from 93% to 90%.
- DO THE LLMs CONTINUE TO TAKE SEARCH SHARE? It would seem logical that they would. We already know younger adults are using ChatGPT and the like as their search engine of choice, and that will probably continue and grow.
- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR WEBSITE? As this newsletter is titled, nobody knows. However, we do know that people are changing their search habits.
- NEW SEARCH HABITS: Instead of typing a keyword phrase into the search box, they are more and more typing a question, or a topic.
- “PROMPT ENGINEERING”: Google it (just kidding) if you don’t know what it means, but you should. It’s the starting point for using the LLMs. This type of thought process is influencing how people search.
That’s all the space we have for this newsletter. Suffice to say, the LLMs are here. Even your search results on Google are now a product of their LLM, Gemini. So, how to not lose out in the new search world? We’ll discuss that in our next newsletter.
