Is SEO Still Worth It in 2026? A Guide for Moving Companies

    Poca Wander Stock/Adobe Stock

The short answer is “Yes,” but the game has changed.

If you run a moving company, you have probably heard some version of this lately: “SEO is dead. AI answers everything now. Just buy ads.” We hear this question often, so here’s a straight answer:

SEO is still worth it in 2026. But the version of SEO that worked in 2018 isn’t enough anymore. Google now puts AI summaries on top of many search engine results pages. Customers ask ChatGPT and other AI tools for mover recommendations. And the cost of a click keeps climbing.

The good news is that the work that helps you rank on Google is the same work that gets you mentioned by AI tools. You do not need two separate strategies. You just need one smart one.

Marketers For Movers has helped moving companies grow since 2010. We were the first marketing agency built only for movers. Below, we will walk you through what changed, your other options, when paid ads make more sense than SEO, and whether you should care more about ranking on Google or getting cited by AI.

    What Actually Changed in Search

The biggest change is Google’s AI Overviews. These are the AI-written summaries that show up above the regular results. They are now a normal part of search, and they take clicks away from websites.

Here is what the research shows:

    • Fewer clicks when an AI summary appears. A 2026 randomized field study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon and the Indian School of Business found that AI Overviews cut clicks to outside websites by 38% on searches where they showed up. Searches that ended with no click at all jumped from 54% to 72%.
    • Pew Research saw the same pattern. People clicked a regular search result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when there was no summary.
    • Being cited inside the AI summary matters. Seer Interactive studied 53 brands and 2.43 billion impressions. Pages cited in an AI Overview earned a 2.1% click-through rate, compared with about 0.9% for pages that were not cited. Searches with no AI Overview still earned the most, at about 3.3%.

Why This is Less Scary for Movers Than it Sounds

AI Overviews do not show up evenly. Seer’s data found them on about 86% of question searches and about 95% of comparison searches. But they appeared on only about 5% of transactional searches.

Think about how people hire a mover. They search “movers near me,” “long distance movers in Tampa,” or “piano movers Tacoma.” Those are buying searches, not research questions. Those searches are still mostly traditional results pages, with ads, a map pack and organic listings.

Where you will feel the pinch is your blog content. A post like “How much does it cost to move a 3-bedroom house?” is exactly the kind of question AI now answers on the page. That content still has value, but its job has shifted. It now builds trust and earns AI citations more than it drives raw traffic.

What Are the Alternatives to SEO Strategies?

SEO is not your only option for getting booked jobs. Most healthy moving companies use a mix. Here is how the main choices stack up.

OptionHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Google Ads (PPC campaigns)This is paid search: You pay each time someone clicks your adFast leads, new markets, busy season pushesLeads stop the day you stop paying
Google Local Services AdsYou pay per lead, shown at the very top with a Google badgePhone calls from local searchersLess control over which leads you get
Purchased moving leadsYou buy customer contact info from a lead providerFilling the schedule quicklyShared leads mean you compete on price
Social media and Facebook adsOrganic posts plus paid ads on Facebook and InstagramBrand awareness, referrals, hiring crewsFewer people are actively shopping for movers there
Video marketingCrew intros, walkthroughs, and tips on YouTube and socialBuilding trust before the first callTakes steady effort to see results
Reputation managementEarning and responding to Google reviewsWinning the map pack and AI recommendationsOnly works if you keep reviews coming in
AI search optimization (GEO)Making your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI to recommendShowing up in AI answersHard to measure and still changing fast

Notice that several of these are not really alternatives to SEO. Reviews, video, and AI optimization all feed the same trust signals that help you rank. Paid ads are the true alternative, and we will cover them when they make more sense below.

One honest note on paid clicks: they are not cheap. WordStream’s 2026 benchmark report studied more than 13,000 search ad campaigns. The Home and Home Improvement category, the closest match for movers, averaged $8.33 per click and $90.92 per lead. Only legal services paid more per click. Your numbers will depend on your market and how well you manage your campaigns.

Do SEO and AI Optimization Overlap?

Yes, and by a lot. This may be the most important point in this whole article.

You may hear new terms like GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). Some agencies sell these as brand new services. Google sees it differently. In its 2026 guide on AI search, Google says its AI features are built on the same core ranking and quality systems as regular search. It also says that from its point of view, optimizing for AI search is still SEO.

Google’s AI tools pull from pages that are already in its search index. To show up as a link in an AI Overview, a page must be indexed and able to appear in regular search with a snippet. In plain terms, if Google cannot find and trust your site, its AI cannot recommend you either.

Here is how the everyday work lines up:

The workHelps you rank on GoogleHelps AI tools cite you

Clear service pages for each move type and city you serveYesYes
A complete, active Google Business ProfileYesYes
A steady flow of honest Google reviewsYesYes
Original content based on your real experienceYesYes
Photos and videos of your crews and trucksYesYes
Your business mentioned on local news, chamber, and industry sitesYesYes

Google even calls out Google Business Profiles by name as a way to help local businesses appear in AI responses.

Where AI Optimization Asks a Little More

The overlap is large, but AI tools do reward a few things more heavily:

    • Real experience over generic tips. Google warns against “commodity content” that anyone could write. A post about how your crew moved a 900-pound safe up three flights of stairs beats another list of packing tips.
    • Direct answers. Pages that clearly answer common questions, like what affects the cost of a long-distance move, are easier for AI to quote.
    • Consistent business details everywhere. Your name, address, phone, and services should match across your site, Google, Yelp, the BBB, and all other industry directories.

    What You Can Skip

Google’s guide says you do not need special AI files like llms.txt, you do not need to chop your content into tiny pieces, and there is no special schema markup for AI. If an agency is selling you a separate “AI package” built on these tricks, ask hard questions.

We have seen AI search turn into real business for movers. One of our Fort Lauderdale clients earned 13 conversions from ChatGPT.

When PPC Is a Better Fit Than SEO

SEO and PPC are not rivals. SEO is like owning your truck. PPC is like renting one. Owning costs more up front and takes time, but it keeps working for you. Renting gets you on the road today, but the meter never stops.

One thing to know up front: buying ads does not help your organic rankings. Google states plainly that advertising with Google has no effect on where your site shows up in its regular results. The two budgets do different jobs.

With that in mind, here are the times we tell moving company owners to lean harder on PPC:

    • You are a brand new company. A new site has no history with Google. It can take many months to earn strong rankings. Ads can bring in calls while your SEO foundation grows. Our web design and SEO for moving startups plan is built for exactly this stage.
    • You just opened a new location. Your main site may rank well at home, but not 60 miles away. Ads let you test demand in a new city before you invest in local pages and a new Google Business Profile.
    • Your busy season is here, and your schedule has gaps. SEO is a long game. If you have trucks sitting idle in June, ads can fill them this month.
    • You want to push high-value jobs. Long-distance, commercial, and specialty moves (pianos, gun safes, office moves) are worth more per job. Paying for those clicks can make sense even when the cost is high.
    • The keywords you need are dominated by big players. In some large metros, national van lines and lead sites hold the top organic spots. Ads can put you above them while you chip away at the rankings.
    • Your Google Business Profile is new or suspended. The map pack is a huge source of mover calls. If you cannot show there yet, ads help cover the gap.

Paid ads also held up better than organic results as AI Overviews spread. In Seer Interactive’s data, paid click-through rate on searches with an AI Overview actually rose slightly, from 14.6% to 16.2%.

When SEO Should Win the Budget

SEO earns the bigger share when your business is established, your market is stable, and you plan to be around for years. Every page you rank, and every review you earn, keeps paying off after the work is done. Ads do not. When you stop paying, the calls stop too.

Most of our clients land on a mix. Ads cover speed and gaps. SEO builds the lead flow you own. If you want to test the waters without a long commitment, our no-contract SEO option lets you do that.

Search Results Page or AI Citation: Which Matters More?

Today, showing up on the Google search results page still matters more for most movers. An AI citation is a growing bonus, and it is worth chasing. But it is not yet where most of your phone calls come from.

Here is why. Conductor studied 13,770 websites and more than 3.3 billion visits. AI tools like ChatGPT sent just 1.08% of all website traffic. Organic search still drove the most visits in every industry they studied.

That same study found AI referrals were growing about 1% month over month. ChatGPT alone sent 87.4% of all AI referral traffic. So the AI channel is small, but it is real, and it is climbing.

Google search results pageAI citation (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews)

What the customer seesYour ad, map listing, reviews, and website linkYour name inside an answer, sometimes with a link
Buying intentHigh on searches like “movers near me”Often high, since the AI already recommended you
How you measure itRankings, calls, and form fills in your reportsHarder to track, and many visits show up as direct traffic
What earns itSEO, reviews, Google Business Profile, adsMostly the same things, plus mentions around the web

The Best Answer: Do Not Pick Just One

These two are more connected than they look. When an AI Overview does appear, being cited in it more than doubles your click rate compared with ranking on the page but not getting cited: about 2.1% versus 0.9% in Seer Interactive’s data.

There is a catch, though. Ranking well on Google doesn’t guarantee ChatGPT will mention you. AI tools also lean on reviews, directory listings and what other sites say about you.

So here is how we would rank your priorities as a moving company owner:

    1. Win the map pack and top organic spots: For your money searches, like “movers in [your city]” and “long distance movers [your city].” This is where most of your booked jobs come from today.
    2. Earn the AI citation: For the questions your customers ask before they call, like cost, timing and how to choose a mover.
    3. Track both: Ask every caller how they found you. You may be surprised how often “ChatGPT told me” comes up.

How to Split Your Budget Based on Where Your Business Is

No single number works for every mover. Your market, your season and your goals all matter. But your business stage is a good place to start.

    Your situationWhere to leanWhy
Brand new moving companyHeavier on PPC, while building a solid site and Google Business ProfileYou need calls now, and SEO needs time to build
Established, one locationHeavier on SEO and reviews, with ads for gaps and peak seasonRankings you own lower your cost per job over time
Adding a new city or branchAds in the new market, SEO pages and a new profile running alongsideAds test demand while local rankings grow
Well known, strong rankingsProtect what you have with steady SEO, reviews, and AI visibility workStaying on top is cheaper than climbing back

Whatever mix you choose, track cost per booked job, not just cost per lead or cost per click. A pricey lead that books a big interstate move is a great deal. A cheap lead that never answers the phone is not.

If you want to control your spend, our Pick Your Progress SEO plans let you choose the level that fits your budget, from SEO Starter to SEO Full Service.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews Show Up When People Search for Movers Near Me?

Not often. Short searches rarely trigger AI summaries. Pew Research found that just 8% of one or two-word Google searches produced an AI summary, compared with 53% of searches with ten words or more. Seer Interactive’s data also showed AI Overviews on only about 5% of transactional searches.

Do I Need to Hire a Separate Company for AI Optimization?

Usually not. Google says that from its point of view, optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. It also says you don’t need special AI files, chopped-up content, or special schema markup. A good SEO partner should already be covering this work.

Will Running Google Ads help My Organic rankings?

No. Google states that advertising with Google has no effect on your site’s presence in its search results. Ads and SEO are separate budgets that do separate jobs.

How Much do Google Ads Cost for a Moving Company?

It depends on your market. WordStream does not track movers as its own category, but its closest match, Home and Home Improvement, averaged $8.33 per click and $90.92 per lead in its 2026 report. Your real costs will vary by city, keyword, and how well you run your campaigns.

Can an SEO Company Guarantee Me the Number One Spot on Google?

No. Google warns that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and it tells business owners to be careful with anyone who claims they can. Look for a partner who shows you real results from moving companies like yours.

Let’s Find the Right Mix for Your Moving Company

So, is SEO still worth it in 2026? For a moving company that plans to be around for the long haul, yes. The search results page is still where most of your customers find you. And the same work that earns those rankings is what gets you recommended by AI.

The smart move is a plan that fits your business today. That might mean more ads while you grow, more SEO once you are established, or a steady mix of both.
