Why ChatGPT Is Now Using Yelp Reviews
Yelp confirmed last month that it has signed a non-exclusive licensing deal with OpenAI that allows its ChatGPT platform to pull directly from its reviews database.
And in the weeks ahead, Yelp says it will roll out its “Request a Quote” feature inside ChatGPT, which will allow users to contact local service providers for quotes without leaving the AI conversation.
ChatGPT needed a partner to help it better address local search queries, an area where it has been historically weak. Questions like “best mover near me,” or “who can move my gun safe this week,” — queries that are the strength of Google’s search algorithm — were not easy for OpenAI to address.
Yelp first disclosed the agreement in its February 2026 earnings report, but the details did not become public until Axios broke the story in late July. Neither company has disclosed the financial terms of the deal. Marketers For Movers first reported Yelp’s ChatGPT influence in April.
The Yelp deal means third-party data will play a bigger role in how ChatGPT answers local queries. It’s possible other AI platforms will follow, as Yelp is free to sign other such deals.
The ChatGPT deal makes Yelp’s roughly 8 million business listings and 330 million cumulative reviews available to the AI platform. ChatGPT can now surface Yelp reviews, star ratings, photos and business details directly inside its answers when someone asks about local businesses. Yelp’s branding and links appear alongside that content, though OpenAI controls the design of how it shows up in the chat interface.
ChatGPT can still cite Google Business Profile’s much larger business-data database indirectly, via available structured data and through search queries on Bing, which shows Google Business Profile listings on its index. But there is no known direct data integration agreement between OpenAI and Google.
Why Yelp, Specifically
Yelp has spent years positioning itself as a distribution partner, licensing its data to platforms like Apple Maps and Yahoo. The OpenAI deal is an extension of that business model, and is Yelp’s first direct foray into the AI ecosystem.
There is also a trust angle. A Morning Consult survey commissioned by Yelp found that 65 percent of Americans have tried AI search, but only 15 percent trust it a lot, and 72 percent want to see sources cited with AI answers. Human-written reviews, with a name and a platform attached, are one way for an AI assistant to back up a recommendation instead of just asserting one.
Google is also part of the backstory here. Yelp filed an antitrust lawsuit against the search giant in 2025, accusing it of monopolizing local search and downgrading competing review content in its own results. Striking a deal with OpenAI gives Yelp a major distribution channel that does not rely on Google.
What This Means for Local Businesses
For any business with a physical location, this changes what “local visibility” actually means. It is no longer only about ranking well in Google Search or getting picked up in Google’s AI Overviews. Now the accuracy and completeness of your Yelp listing will directly affect what ChatGPT tells someone who asks where to go for a service.
A few practical takeaways:
- Keep your Yelp listing accurate. Business hours, address, categories, and photos that are outdated or wrong on Yelp can now get repeated confidently inside a ChatGPT answer.
- Review volume and recency on Yelp will matter more than ever. A thin or stale review profile gives the AI less to work with.
- Responding to reviews, both positive and negative, is no longer just a reputation exercise. It is part of the raw material an AI model draws from.
- Google Business Profile optimization is still an important source for traditional search and Google’s own AI Overviews.
The Bottom Line
While ChatGPT is now pulling from Yelp’s review database, it does not mean Google reviews stop mattering.
It means Yelp has secured its own seat at the table in how AI assistants answer local questions, and businesses now need to treat their Yelp presence with the same care they give their Google Business Profile.
